Things to Talk About #77
◆ Ask children to tell you about this photo. Ask: What do you see? ¿Qué ven?
Tell children that this is a train. The engine (or locomotive) pulls train cars along
two tracks. Ask: Have you ever been a passenger on a train? Where did you go? ¿Han sido alguna vez pasajeros de un tren? ¿Dónde fueron?
◆ Explain to children that the driver of the train is called the engineer. He sits in the engine. Ask: Can you see him in this photograph? ¿Lo pueden ver en esta fotografía? Point to
the engineer.
◆ Tell children that trains haul (carry) people and things, such as automobiles, oil, wood, steel, and coal.
◆ Ask: What noise does a train make? ¿Qué sonido hace el tren? (chug, chug; toot, toot; clickety, clack, clickety clack)
◆ Explain to children that a train runs on railroad tracks. It cannot go anywhere unless there are tracks. Ask: What would happen if you had to follow tracks wherever you went? ¿Qué pasaría si donde sea que vayan tuviesen que seguir unas vías?

Create a railroad track by making two parallel lines with masking tape. Be sure to connect several places that children are likely to go. For example the “tracks” might connect the fyrounrtrdooomr.aIndvittheecchoiladtrreancktoofrotrhme cairtcraleinar(ewaaalkndsinthgelesnfialec)katnadblfeo.lWlowindthtehteratrcakcsk.s around
Provide toy trains and tracks. Encourage children to build tracks and move the trains along them. If your toy train set includes an engine or locomotive and a caboose, be sure to point out the names of these special train cars. Some children may be able to add additional train vocabulary to the discussions. Recognize their expertise and find ways for them to share it with other children.
Explain that the place where a train stops to take on new passengers or let passengers off is called a station. Encourage children to help you set up a train station. You will need a ticket seller or machine, tickets, a ticket taker, chairs for waiting, and perhaps some small suitcases. Invite children to purchase tickets and board the train (several sit-in size boxes)
